Cancarb Thermax® N990CG in Silicone Milking Liners
August 22, 2026
Cancarb Limited has published a Technical Bulletin about the benefits of using Thermax® N990CG in milking liners made of silicone. Thermax® N990CG is an FDA-approved thermal carbon black that’s designed to improve the properties and performance of rubber that’s used repeatedly with food items.
Silicone and Thermax® N990CG
Silicone milking liners are molded rubber components for automated milking machines that provide an interface between the cow and the equipment. Other elastomers are also used in milking liners, but silicone resists degradation from fat absorption. Silicone also maintains its flexibility and, because of its relative softness, applies less force to cows for a reduced risk of callous formation.
Thermax® N990CG has an FDA Food Contact Notification (FCN No. 2420) that allows its use in repeated food/dairy exposure. This specialized material has low levels of PAH, a category of chemical compounds that are potentially carcinogenic. Cancarb is the first manufacturer to develop a low-PAH thermal carbon black.
Independent Test Results
As the Technical Bulletin from Cancarb explains, silicone formulations with Thermax® N990CG offer regulatory, chemical, and physical benefits that include:
- Improved fluid aging resistance
- Increased scorch safety
- Low sulfur and cure system compatibility
- Aesthetic coloration
- Stable processing and physical integrity
ACE Laboratories in Ravenna, Ohio, performed the testing for Cancarb. The independent testing laboratory evaluated the effects of loading up to 5.0 phr of N990CG into peroxide-cured silicone formulations. Cancarb’s Technical Bulletin provides the test results.
