Dow Technical Presentation: Moldable Optical Silicones Enable Advanced Automotive Lighting
February 14, 2023
Dow is sharing a technical presentation about how its SILASTIC™ Moldable Optical Silicones are enabling advanced automotive lighting. For example, adaptive driving beam (ADB) technologies use a high-power LED matrix with a silicone primary lens. Rear lamps and indicators use linear LEDs with a silicone coupler and light guide. Dow’s technical presentation also covers material, mechanical, and optical properties.
Unlike liquid silicone rubber (LSR), SILASTIC™ Moldable Optical Silicones are clear rather than hazy. Yet, they can be molded like LSRs. Dow’s advanced silicones readily support liquid injection molding and have cure properties that are tuned for optical performance. These elastomers can be soft and pliable or firm and tough, but they’re also lightweight and can withstand extreme environments.
As Dow’s technical presentation explains, SILASTIC™ moldable optical silicones meet automotive industry standards such as FMVSS 108 Appendix H for weather, SAE J400 for impact, FMVSS 108 Appendix J for abrasion resistance, SMW 14334 for chemical resistance, and FMVSS 302 for flammability.
