Cancarb Advances Carbon Neutrality Goals with Major Solar Investment
September 12, 2025
Cancarb Limited is underscoring its commitment to sustainability by installing 7,000 solar panels near its carbon black plant in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The project will provide the production facility with approximately 3.5 MW of renewable energy and supports the sustainability goals of Cancarb’s parent company and its customers.
Cancarb’s parent company, Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd., is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Many Cancarb customers want to buy carbon black from companies that are committed to sustainable operations, and solar power produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than burning fossil fuels.
Committed to Sustainability
Cancarb’s recent investment demonstrates its ongoing commitment to sustainability. Last year, the company earned its third Platinum Sustainability Rating from EcoVadis, a global provider of corporate and environmental scorecards. Cancarb’s commitment also extends to local its community and includes a tree planting and donations to various sustainable and charitable causes.
As the leading provider of thermal carbon blacks, Cancarb expanded its Medicine Hat facility in 2021 with the completion of a sixth unit. Subsequently, the company developed Thermax® N990CG, a thermal carbon black with low levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), substances that are listed as carcinogens. Production of this rubber additive also helps to power the local community.
Generating Electricity
Waste heat from Cancarb’s carbon black facility generates electricity for approximately 20% of Medicine Hat. In turn, this reduces the city’s consumption of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. The 7,000 solar panels that Cancarb plans to install will be located on a vacant lot near its facility, and the project has a projected completion date of mid-2026.
RDAbbott supplies Thermax® N990CG and has represented Cancarb products in the United States and Canada since 2017. In 2023, RDAbbott became the exclusive distributor for Thermax® brand medium thermal carbon black in Mexico.
