Cancarb Commissions New Solar Power Facility

Cancarb Limited has completed and commissioned a new solar power facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The project underscores Cancarb’s long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and will provide a substantial portion of the electricity required for its thermal carbon black manufacturing operations.

A Global First in Carbon Black Manufacturing

Cancarb’s $7 million installation is the world’s only utility-scale solar generation project integrated directly upstream of a thermal carbon black manufacturing operation. It’s also the largest renewable energy investment within the Tokai Carbon Group, of which Cancarb is a member. The new facility features over 7,000 solar panels and has a generation capacity of approximately 3.5 megawatts (MW).

Committed to Environmental Sustainability

This achievement builds upon Cancarb’s legacy of sustainability initiatives. More than 25 years ago, the company commissioned a waste heat recovery facility that captures and converts heat energy into electricity. Since then, the company has earned three Platinum Sustainability Ratings from EcoVadis, a global provider of corporate and environmental scorecards.

Thermax® Medium Thermal Carbon Black

Cancarb’s Medicine Hat manufacturing operations produce multiple grades of medium thermal carbon black under its Thermax® brand. This ultra-pure form of industrial carbon is used as functional filler and reinforcing agent in rubber products. Thermax® N990CG contains low levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), substances that are known in carcinogens.
